The difference in compensation for federal and private-sector workers

2/2/2012 6:48:37 AM

The Congressional Budget Office has done a study comparing the compensation (wages, benefits, etc.) of federal civilian and private-sector employees. What were the huge differences in compensation?

  • Federal employees with professional degree or a doctorate totaled 18 percent less on average than private-sector employees.
  • Federal employees with a bachelors degree totaled 15 percent more on average.

  • Federal employees with just a high school education totaled 36 percent more on average.

Interestingly, wages weren't the biggest difference, benefits (like health insurance) were!

Should these differences be accepted as inevitable differences, or should the full compensation be more equal?
